At the moment, I feel like I’m under siege. In my office, I hear the constant pounding of sand. Yes, really. They are repairing and improving Bliss Cottage’s brick patio. It had been undone by a tenacious, burrowing and electricity-chomping chipmunk. You can get away with a lot when you’re that cute. And now, there are several talented and strong individuals working from sunup to sundown on the project. My basement office vibrates. My head hurts from the sound of the bricks being cut. I feel, with all this pain, I should be able to work it into a story, but it would be too horrible to print. Or boring…
I’ve been under siege in the review area too. I write the stories that are inside of me, and often, even I don’t know where the characters will lead me. Some may be disappointed that I’m not writing the classic ghost story, and if I am too weird for them, so be it.
Writing isn’t an exact science. I do my best to write an entertaining series. My characters all have a path, and I do my best to bring them through the complex situations I write them into. I start each book as if I’ve dropped by to see what my crazy friends are up to. I look at the profession they have chosen and the wear-and-tear it has on them. Who are they? How did they get here? To me they are real. My job is to tell their stories and hopefully entertain readers along the way.
For those that have stayed with me from the beginning, I thank you. I promise to continue to write the “Haunted Series” until there are no new stories to tell. I’m three quarters through the first draft of a one-house “Haunted Series” book called “A Rose by Any Other Name.” For those waiting for the next “Cin Fin-Lathen” book, it should be out before the end of the month. I have a lot of stories inside of me. All I need is the time in which to bring them to you.
My Webguy reminds me to tell you to post your questions for the next “Ask Alexie” podcast. I think we still have a few weeks.
The pounding has stopped! I’m going to take advantage of this and see if I can get Murphy in here for a consult. I hope he’s not the reason the workmen have stopped…
